BERRY NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Berry Best Guess for Breed: Shepherd mix Best Guess for Age: 6 years as of July 2026 SEX: male Approximate Weight: 70 lbs Gets Along With: Other dogs! We haven't seen him with cats or kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters! Currently Living at: DC area foster home Special adoption considerations: Berry is a truly Lucky Dog. He tested positive for heartworms, but landed in a place where heartworm treatment is provided! Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. Heartworm dogs can resume full active and normal lives, but need to be kept calm for 4-6 weeks after treatment. We are happy to discuss where in the treatment process this Lucky Dog is in right now! Just email the adoption coordinator - the address is at lower left! Berry is Looking For: His forever home! This handsome boy landed in the shelter through no fault of his own. Now he's looking for his own humans to trot alongside on those sniffy walks and adventures - he wants to burn all that awesome dog energy! Making new pup pals along and having plenty of opportunity to run and play is on his wish list along with quality kibble and a cushy dog bed. But above all he wants to know where he belongs, to be under his own roof, to be safe and loved. In exchange, he promises adoring gazes and loyal companionship for all his days. What do you say? Can you see him by your side? What My Foster Says About Me: Berry is a big, handsome German Shepherd with a heart to match. Despite his intimidating appearance, he is one of the sweetest, gentlest boys you’ll ever meet. Berry was initially a little nervous in his new environment, but he quickly warmed up and has blossomed into an incredibly affectionate companion. These days, he jumps on the couch as soon as I get home and loves nothing more than snuggling next to his person. He’ll happily close his eyes while you rub his ears or nose, and he’s even been known to try sneaking into bed at night! Berry is exceptionally smart, calm, and eager to learn. He’s quickly picking up basic commands, has had no accidents in the house, and does wonderfully in his kennel while I’m at work. He’s also a great walking companion who loves exploring and sniffing everything along the way. Berry loves other dogs and is wonderfully gentle when meeting new friends. He has also been fantastic with children of various ages and does well in busy environments like farmers markets and dog-friendly restaurants. His favorite activity, however, is simply being with his person. Whether you’re making the bed, doing the dishes, going for a walk, or relaxing on the couch, Berry wants to be right there “helping.” He may look like a big, serious German Shepherd, but underneath it all is a total softie who just wants to love his people. Berry is truly a special boy and would make a wonderful, loyal, loving addition to a family. Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $475, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment.
